Why card payments sometimes fail
Payment issues are usually caused by small, easily fixed details. Below are the most common reasons transactions fail, followed by some less common possibilities.
Most common reasons
-
Payment not fully completed
The Recaptcha or Complete Payment button was not pressed at the end of checkout. -
Payment not given enough time to process
After pressing Complete Payment, it can take around 10 seconds to process. Pressing back, refresh, or closing the page too soon can interrupt the transaction. -
Billing address mismatch
The billing address entered must match the address registered to your card exactly. -
Bank security checks
Your bank may temporarily block the payment as part of routine fraud prevention, especially for online or higher-value transactions. -
Incorrect card details
A small typo in the card number, expiry date, or CVV code can cause the payment to fail. -
Insufficient funds
The available balance on the card was not enough to complete the transaction. -
Spending or online limits reached
Daily spending limits or online payment limits set by your bank may have been exceeded. -
Expired or inactive card
The card may have expired or not been activated for online payments. -
Online or international payments disabled
Some cards require online or international payments to be enabled by the card issuer.
Less common reasons
-
3D Secure authentication not completed
The bank’s verification step (one-time passcode, banking app approval, etc.) wasn’t finished or timed out. -
Poor internet connection or page refresh
Losing connection or refreshing the page during checkout can interrupt the payment. -
Using an unsupported card type
Some cards (e.g., certain prepaid, virtual, or business cards) may not be accepted. -
Temporary bank or payment provider outage
Rare, but sometimes card networks or banks experience short disruptions. -
Multiple rapid attempts
Several failed attempts in a short time can trigger a temporary block for security reasons.
What to do next
Please double-check your details and wait for the payment to fully process before navigating away. If the problem continues, contact your card provider, or get in touch with us — we’re happy to help.
